BIS Registration certificate : why is it mandatory to obtain electronics items?

BIS Certificate is a method of delivering a third party guarantee of product quality, safety, and reliability of products to the customers and it is mainly required for the import of products in India. BIS certificate is a voluntary program however the government has made it compulsory for some products to take into consideration public health. In India for several electronics items such as semiconductors, motor controllers, circuit breakers, voltage switchgear, and other products the BIS certification is mandatory. A BIS license with Certification entitles the holder to use the ISI mark on their goods, indicating that the product fulfills the Bureau of Indian Standards’ Indian standards.

BIS Certification is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) office in India. It was set up to nurture and promote standards movement in the country. After conducting a safety test of the product according to the defined Indian Standard and furnishing of required documents the Bureau of Indian Standards grants this certificate.

In the following points ahead we will look at the procedure for obtaining BIS certification for a product in India.

The steps to obtain BIS certification is as follows:

The main distinction between the two certifications is that only the BIS-ISI accreditation requires the manufacturing company to undergo a factory audit. As the products are covered under the BIS-CRS scheme, manufacturers of IT and consumer electronics usually avoid a factory inspection. Also, product tests do not need to be performed every year under this plan, instead, they must be requested on a case-by-case basis.

BIS CRS India certification :

  • By the Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) documentation and application submission.
  • Execution of the tests and provision of test samples.
  • With the BIS-CRS marks, marking and labeling of the product.

BIS ISI India certification :

BIS-ISI certification is required for almost all other product groups that require BIS-ISI certification. A factory inspection is required in this situation which is usually performed a few months after application. During the factory inspection, the auditor chooses the test samples that must be sent to India for testing,

For BIS-ISI the certification process is following :

  • Authorized Indian representative submits the documentation and application.
  • Execution of the tests and provision of test samples.
  • Factory inspection by Indian auditor
  • With the BIS-ISI marks marking and labeling of parts

To avoid revisions, the information on all documents must be correct. In India, there are a variety of test laboratories that can perform BIS inspection and safety BIS testing of the parts.

It is  mandatory to obtain Indian BIS certification of electronics items because the Indian government has made the BIS certificate compulsory for selling several electronic items in the country.  Importing electronic items from other countries will be hampered  by the lack of a BIS certificate. This is the reason the Indian government is looking forward to limiting the import of low-quality Chinese products while preventing them from flooding Indian markets.

Products that require BIS certificate compulsory :

  • Automobile accessories
  • Cylinders, Valves, and Regulators
  • Diesel engines
  • Electrical Transformers
  • Food and related products
  • Household electrical goods
  • Oil pressure stoves
  • Steel Products
  • Cement
  • Medical Equipment

How long will it take to get a BIS License?

  • If the product has already been tested and the prior test results are to be used  for BIS CRS registration, from the date of online application receipt, the test reports mustn’t be older than 90 days .
  • The supplementary report will be considered but not older than 90 days from the date of application if you submit a supplementary test report from the brand whose product is already tested and accepted by BIS.
  • Then the period of testing will depend on the lab chosen by the manufacturer and the submission of technical details for testing the product. Directly to any of the BIS-recognized labs, samples for initial registration can be submitted.
  • Afterward, if all submitted documents are in order the registration will be processed by Indian BIS . Only during the surveillance process independent samples are picked up.

How much does BIS registration cost?

The cost to obtain the BIS Registration will vary concerning the following:

  • Location of Manufacturer. (Domestic/Overseas)
  • Applicable government fee and service fee.
  • Several Products and types of Models.
